Camera 35

We are a diverse group of photographers who organize outings, social events, meetings, and competitions.

Camera 35 St. John’s is a photography club based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The club was officially founded around 1979, but there is record of predecessor groups dating back to the early 1950s, comprising well-known St. John’s names, such as Ray Tooton, Maurice Wilansky, Ern Maunder, and even Gerald S. Doyle.

The club currently has approximately 50 members who meet every second Wednesday evening from September to June at the College of the North Atlantic, Prince Phillip Drive campus. Meeting agendas include show and tell, critic’s corner, CAPA competition selections, 5-minute quick tips, longer presentations, discussion topics, in-club theme competitions, and guest speakers. The club also organizes monthly local outings and annual weekend trips to special locations on the island.

We encourage all members to share photos with the club; after all, a photography club is about sharing your work and getting feedback! Most meeting agendas include plenty of time for Show and Tell and Critic’s Corner.

One of the many benefits of joining Camera 35 St. John’s is participating in Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) and in club competitions. Our club is one of 94 across Canada and selects the best photographs submitted by club members.

Monthly outings take place throughout the year and include many interesting—and sometimes inaccessible—locations. Themes include many styles including landscapes, portraits, sports, event, macro, and nature photography. Every year we plan an extended trip.

Guest speakers occasionally share their experiences as a photographer or expert in a related field. The club has been fortunate to host many well known and prestigious photographers with exceptional portfolios.
